Rousseau (1844-1910) was a catalyst in the creation of the Naive (or Primitive) style during the Post-Impressionism movement. His paintings express innocence, clarity, and colour; while at the same time a subtle undertone and acceptance of the struggle and harshness inherant in being a creature alive in the world. Employed as a civil-servant, he did not devote himself full-time to painting until the age of 49.
